Ranita Roy was born in Andul, a small town near Kolkata, currently based between Kolkata and Pune, India. Her practice explores the intersections of fiction and reality, resulting in a quasi-documentary outcome. She completed Hostile environment awareness training (HEAT) at Jakarta nominated by Reuters. Whose work has been published in various media publications including Reuters, The Washington Post Magazine, The New York Times, CNN, The Caravan magazine, NPR, Buzzfeed News, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The Cosmopolitan Magazine, The National (UAE), DW News, BBC. She completed a Master’s degree in Environmental Science, and also knowledge in Anthropology, Zoology, and Botany, all of which helped her to understand the land and its people, in a very intimate way. She focused on stories related to Environment, social justice, and Mental Health with a deeper narrative. She became a Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellow. In 2022 "BAPI" the short film by Ranita Roy sown in 'Space to Breathe' within the spectacular 'Grote Kerk' as part of the Breda Photo festival in The Netherlands. She is currently exploring the Western Ghats and the Himalayas in India. Member of Magnum Foundation, Visura, Women Photograph, Diversify Photo, Authority Collective, and PhotoVogue.
